Don Woodall

Picture
Understanding of dynamics of pioneering grasses, nurse grasses and slower growing  species that offer permanent vegetative solutions to difficult poverty soil sites, as well as native legumes that help maintain grass vigor and reduce woody/invasive competition over time Identification of niches for New England native forbs that add to grass populations without competing. Poor-soil wildflowers planting and seeding systems for improved performance in poverty and saturated soils including the use of  Truax seeder.

As a career seeds man Don has access to unique combination of widely available and extremely rare, native cool, and warm season grasses as well as native forbs, principally wildflowers.  Don’s collection work began as a search for cool season grass that survived in the coastal course sands of New England, as well as inland areas of gravel soils. He identified Deschampsia flexuosa (coastal hair grass) as the most prevalent native grass on Cape Cod and adjacent coastal areas. In 2009 the variety “Pilgrim” was licensed as a “Certified Wild land Collection” by Colonial Seed selected from plants growing in an array of extreme sands in Wellfleet and Brewster on cape Cod. “Pilgrim” is now in commercial production. The Certified Wild Land Program is administered by a unit of Oregon State University.
